I know I haven’t been writing much since the new year, that’s because I have begun my first pastorate! It is exciting, humbling, and a bit scary all at the same time.

I am still settling into a routine and hope to get back to some regular posts soon. Until then, one of the great benefits of serving a church is that I get to preach every Sunday. So, until I establish a more regular blogging schedule, I plan on posting the sermons on here.

Hope this first month of the new year has treated you well.

Introducing Categories!

I’ve had categories on here before, but there were a ton of them and they didn’t make a whole lot of sense. After some brainstorming and reviewing my posts over the past year I have come up with 6 nice and neat categories which most posts here will fall under. Now I just need to think of a seventh category to make this blog truly biblical.

Housekeeping – for posts like this one which make announcements about the blog itself.
Life is a Pilgrimage – stories from my life as they unfold.
Not to be Taken Too Seriously – I need a break from theologizing all day. In this category I can creatively express myself, or simply share the creativity of others.
Op/Ed – My opinion [slash] editorials. I’ve discovered that this is the majority of the content on the blog. It sure has been interesting to see what I said about a given topic just a year ago. I’m sure it will be interesting to look back in years to come.
Sermons – When I preach the good news, I’m going to share it with the world right here.
Worship Resource – For any liturgies, prayers, or other resources I create for use in worship settings.
And seven… I should really come up with a seventh category. Any ideas?

You may also notice that the archives section on the side bar is missing. That’s because they were getting long. I put the archives on its own page, so you can read the blog like a novel over and over again if you are that into it.

I hope these small changes improve how things run here. Next project: taming the tags.

Website update and redesign!

No need to adjust your computer monitors, The Prophet Joel underwent a little redesign. The previous WordPress theme was a bit cluttered, and now I am able to add a custom header image.

There will always be some buggy stuff to work out anytime a WordPress theme is changed, so bear with me until I find them all.

In the mean time let me know what you think of the new look and feel of the blog.

Imported my old blog into this one

I had a blog at protestantcatholic.blogspot.com It focused primiarily on my inter-church marriage and some of the struggles I face in the universal church. I imported it here so that I can be a bit more free to write about happenings in the church more generally.

The old posts will be put into a category called “protestant-catholic” if you are interested in reading them.

I am a fourth year seminary student preparing for ordination in the Christian Church. I am going to use this blog to assist me in sermon preparation. As I choose scriptures, exegete, gather illustrations, and write, I will post my progress here.

My hope is to receive your comments so that I may constantly improve my ability to preach God’s word. A blog is also a great way to keep all of my preparation in one place so that I can see where I have been over time. Finally I hope to provide a resource for others who are commissioned with the task of preaching.
